In a negative world, it can sometimes be hard to stay positive. I know I had to make conscious changes in my everyday life to see the silver lining. Everyone is different, but hopefully some of these tips can help you too!
Keep a gratitude/thankfulness journal.
By writing down your happy thoughts daily, or whenever the mood strikes you, you will create more happy thoughts. It’s an nice sunshiney cycle. You may start writing that you’re thankful for your bestfriend being their when you had a rough breakup, and next thing you know you’re reminiscing how your grandma makes your favorite cookies, or that you don’t totally hate your job.
I have a thankfulness journal and I’ve definitely seen a different in the way I face the world since using it. I write three things I’m thankful for whenever the mood strikes. I try to do it every day, but I don’t want it to feel like a chore! My notebook was $1.50 from Michaels! I also decorate it with washi tape and stickers, so it’s kind of like a scrapbook.
Don’t watch the news first thing when you wake up.
The news, be it online or on T.V., is a great resource. That being sad, starting your day with negativity can be harmful to your outlook. Wake up with the sun if you can. Then take a few moments to do something you love before getting ready. That can be reading a book, yoga, or making a great breakfast! Then, after you get dressed, take a look at the news. Hopefully your ‘me’ time can act as a buffer to that negativity!
Give at least one sincere compliment a day.
Bonus points if it’s to a complete stranger!
But really, compliments don’t cost anything and they can make another persons month! I often give out random compliments to stranger. Sometimes my friends and family look at me strange, but it’s nice seeing the other person’s smile!
Change your wording.
I can’t no longer exists! Now it’s “I can try”! By changing your wording, you change your feelings towards to situation you’re in. It’s basically a ‘fake it til you make it’ scenario. Try it for three days straight and I bet you’ll feel better about yourself.
Surround yourself with positive people.
You are who you surround yourself with! It’s going to be very hard to find the silver lining in situations if you’re constantly surrounded by people who only care about the drab side of things.
Sweat is the lubrication for a happy life! (Can I say that? We’re going with it folks.) By taking time out of your day to get physical, in whatever style you prefer, you’re making ‘me’ time. Watching yourself get more flexible or stronger will instantly boost your self esteem. And even if the changes comes slowly…you’re doing something a lot of other people won’t! Everyone is beautiful on the outside, but exercise certainly makes you feel beautiful on the outside!
